Entry #10: Gut and Feelings

Image
Have you ever found yourself lying in bed, stress-eating while doom-scrolling? Have you felt yourself with no energy to do anything, let alone get yourself in order? Have you ever wondered why your brain feels like it's running on an old version of Windows? Could the answer to your mental funk be hiding... in your gut?  Yes. Turns out your stomach isn't just for digesting food and holding butterflies after your crush gave you that look. It's actually got a pretty active side gig as the gut is the "second brain." Scientists have coined this term, and to be honest, sometimes it seems like the real brain isn't in charge anymore. Your gut could actually help improve your mental health, sounds insane, doesn't it? Antidepressants have been the go-to treatment for anxiety and depression, and they've helped a lot of people. But more recently, studies are pointing to something surprising: probiotics and prebiotics-compounds that support a healthy gut microbiom...

Entry #9: Organic Label: Fancy Marketing Tactic?

Image
Free Image: Organic At your most recent grocery run, you've probably seen the "USDA Organic" label on everything from apples to meat. It promises food grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or GMOs. But is it truly a guarantee of healthier or more ethical food, or just another marketing strategy to get us to pay more? According to the USDA , organic certification involves strict standards, including annual inspections and detailed documentation of farming practices.  Don't Fall for the Labels In my own health journey, I've noticed how often people assume "organic" automatically means healthier. Consumers think organic is better without really knowing what the label means. Through this blog post, I hope to get the reader questioning those labels. I want the consumers to stop falling for those marketing tactics. The organic community has increased to a $60 billion industry. That's insane! With so many different organic products, the guideli...

Entry #8: The Blue Secret

Image
Imagine if someone told you there was a way to live longer and feel better, without any sort of insane juicing or fasting. This can be achieved without the need for a kale juice in the morning or eating food that tastes like sadness. Do I have your attention? Good, this can be done by following a simple concept, the  Blue Zone Diet.  There are five places in the world where people live so long and healthy, it kind of makes the rest of us look like we're aging in dog years. No, seriously. These regions - Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece), and Loma Linda (California)- have unusually high numbers of people living into their 90s and beyond! With barely any wrinkles or chronic disease, they achieve this miraculous event without the need to live off of protein powder or chase the latest TikTok trend. So what are they doing?  What's the Blue Zone Diet? The Blue Zone Diet doesn't require any sort of ceremony to become a part of it or an...

Entry #7: Fresh Me Please

Image
Thanks to my ENG101 class, I recently watched a documentary called Fresh. If you haven't seen it, let's say it's not one of those hosted documentaries where they take us to the countryside to make fresh pasta and tomato sauce. No. This documentary is full of reality about where our food comes from, and let me tell you, it is not romanticized.  Fresh is an eye-opening documentary that doesn't just guilt-trip you into growing all your own food by the following Monday (thanks to Will Allen); it just... makes you think. A whole lot. The film pulls back all the layers of our food system and forces us to be uncomfortable about what we eat. After watching the documentary, let me tell you I've found myself side-eyeing my groceries.  Free Image: Side Eye The Dark Side of  Fresh   At its core, Fresh is about the U.S. food system—not just what's on your plates but how it got there, from seed to table. The film includes everything from factory farming to chemical-heavy cro...

Image
Ahhh dieting, we've all been there-trying the latest diet pushed on us. Seeing how an influencer went through an amazing transformation with "this diet you got to try!" And we will give it a try of course, but how long until you're staring at a slice of pizza longing for just a bite and reconsidering if that bowl of kale is really worth it. Well what if there was an easygoing lifestyle change that instead of obsessing if you're eating your weight in protein, or eliminating whole food groups (like you Keto, I see you). That lifestyle change begins with the Mediterranean Diet. This secret that doctors and nutrition experts rave about is all about enjoying fresh and delicious balanced foods. Doesn't that sound more appealing?  Free Image: Mediterranean Diet What is the Mediterranean Diet Imagine this: you're having dinner, a big ol' salad with a drizzle of olive oil, a nice piece of salmon on a plate with some roasted veggies and maybe accompany that wi...

Entry#4: Protein Packed, Good or Bad?: The Truth Behind the Social Media Hype

Image
In a world where information can be shared at the speed of light, everyone seems to be a fitness guru. With the daily use of  TikTok  and Instagram  there is endless fitness and dieting hacks available at our fingertips. Now let's dive deep into a popular belief that is circling the web: If you want to lose fat or build muscle, you need to eat your weight in protein. Let me explain what this means- "social media experts" say if you weigh 170 pounds, the idea is you would consume 170 grams of protein a day. Sounds easy enough right? But now before you try eating an excessive amount of chicken, let's see if this is actually beneficial or potentially harmful for your body.  Free Image: chicken overload How Much Protein is Actually Needed?  Let's put things into perspective. Protein is essential to our bodies it helps repair tissue, and build muscle. So a bunch of positives, right? Look at it this way, anything in moderation is good. Moderation is the key word here....

Entry #5: Dangerous Fries? Rhetorical Look into Allstate's "Fries" Mayhem Commercial

Image
We've all found ourselves cursing down the road with a screaming bag of fast food fries ready to be devoured before arriving at our destination. Naturally, we try balancing eating and driving, but then we're hit with that moment we took it too far. Now we're trying to multitask paying attention to the road and opening up a ketchup package for those tasty fries. Entering now is Allstate's hilarious "Fries" Mayhem  commercial which takes our natural instinct into a big (and quite funny) disaster.   Free Image: Fries What's the ad really about? Of course, the ad is trying to sell car insurance to the audience, but it also is making us rethink our driving habits. The goal of the ad is to use a relatable moment and intensify how something so basic could become a major distraction. With the use of humor, the ad reminds us to keep our eyes on the road to avoid distractions that could have devastating consequences. All this could happen because we couldn't w...
